DRDO conducts successful flight test of new version of Akash Missile
The Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) said on Monday that a new version of the Akash Missile, the Akash Prime, had been successfully tested from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Chandipur, Odisha. In its first flight test after upgrading the missile, it stopped and destroyed an unmanned mimicking anime aircraft.
Earlier on July 21, DRDO on Wednesday successfully tested a new version of the air-to-air missile system Akash from the Integrated Test Range in Odisha. This successful test will prove to be important for enhancing the combat capability of the Indian Air Force.
The Defense Ministry said the missile, which is equipped with all types of weapons systems, was tested from a ground-based platform and based on data obtained from the flight of the missile during the test, it was confirmed that all weapons systems are successful and work without any glitches.
The new version of the Akash missile (Akash NG) is slightly better than its old version and can hit a range of up to 25 kilometers. Apart from this on the same day DRDO tested an indigenously developed low weight anti-tank guided missile, which can be carried on the shoulder of a person. With this successful test the way has been cleared by the army for its construction. The missile was developed to enhance the capabilities of the Indian Army.
The government has given permission for the export of Akash missiles
The Akash Missile has been developed by DRDO's Hyderabad-based laboratory in collaboration with other branches of the research institute. ITR used surveillance systems such as electro-optical tracking system, radar and telemetry to keep track of the statistics attached to the flight of the missile. In December last year, the government approved the export of Akash missiles and formed a high-level committee to sell them in various countries.
The committee includes Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval are involved and are designed to allow the export of indigenously developed vital defense equipment. On the successful test of the Man Portable Anti-Tank Missile, the Ministry of Defense described it as a major step towards the government's 'self-reliant campaign'.
