What are brand name and generic drugs? 

Let us, explain to you in general terms that there are two types of drugs available in the market. Before explaining the difference between the two, let us tell you how drugs are made. Indeed, there is a formula in which the drug is made by mixing different chemicals. Like any substance used to relieve pain, medicine is made from that substance. When this drug is made by a big pharmaceutical company it becomes a branded drug. The wrapper has only the company name on it, while it is made from other materials, which you can see above the company name on the drug wrapper. 

At the same time, when a small company makes drugs by mixing the same substances, it is called generic drugs in the market. There is no difference between these two drugs, only the difference in name and brand. For example, suppose you are buying some goods from a small company, but the formula for making the medicine is the same, so there is no difference in the quality of the medicine. Also, branded companies start making it after the patent expires.

Aarushi said, 'Generic drugs are those that are sold under a common name. The only major difference between generic and branded drugs is the marketing strategy used to build image and increase sales. Over the years, the pharmaceutical industry, drug manufacturers have created the image of branded drugs as a better alternative to generic drugs. 

It’s important to remember that there are brand name and generic versions of medicines not only for mood disorders but for other conditions as well—high blood pressure, diabetes, etc. Today, about 50 percent of all prescriptions are filled with generic drugs. The FDA has set up  standards for generic drugs that might seem complicated but are really basic.

Why do brand name drugs cost more than generics? 

It takes several years, costly scientific development and many clinical studies to get a drug approved. Manufacturers of new brand name drugs (also called “pioneer drugs”) usually take on the research and development costs for new medications. These research and development costs, along with marketing costs, account for most of the higher prices we pay for most brand name drugs. 

In contrast, generic drugs have less research and development costs since the original manufacturer has already done many studies to make sure the drug is safe. These savings are passed on to the consumer. 

However, while the brand name form is still protected by its patent, no generics can be produced. And, if a brand name drug has only just recently lost its patent, there may only be one generic form available. Usually, when there’s only one generic option available, it will be more expensive.

Is the brand name medicine or the generic version the best option? The answer is that it depends. There are several different things that you and your doctor can consider:

■ How difficult it is to control your medical condition 

■ How sensitive you are to changes in medication treatment 

■ How difficult it is to pay for your prescriptions, including whether your insurance covers prescriptions
