It is believed that on the day of Dusshera, King Rama defeated Ravana and his army after a long and tedious battle. This battle is important as good and true victory over evil and corruption. For this reason, Vijaya Dashami is also known for its victory day.

According to Hindu mythology, the demonic king Ravana kidnapped Lord Rama's wife which led to a great war between them. Ravana was given the blessing of immortality by King Brahma so he could not be killed. After a series of incidents, Lord Rama kills Ravana by shooting an arrow with his belly button after a series of incidents. This too illustrates the fact that one should not eliminate one bad trait individually or individually, but one step at a time.
Dusshera also celebrates the day when Goddess Durga defeats the demon Mahishasura and the army. He has just won after killing the buffalo demon that caused the damage

There are other myths associated with this day. In the Mahabharata, the day also marks the victory of Arjuna with one hand over the entire Kaurava army. Arjuna is also known as 'Vijaya' and therefore, the army is celebrated as 'Vijaya Dashami'. On this day worshiping the Shami tree is very important because it is believed that Arjuna hid his weapons inside the tree during the exile. In the southern parts of India, Shami Puja is also known as Banni Puja and Jammi Puja. In eastern parts of India, the day is also marked as Durga Puja and Sindoor Khela (women wearing red saree and playing with vermillion) are also scheduled for the day.
There are several legendary stories behind this festival. This day in some parts of India marks the day on which the Goddess Durga killed the demon Mahishasur. That is why all nine characters of Sister Durga are worshiped in Navaratri. It is also said that Goddess Durga was immersed in water with devotees symbolizing the departure of the goddess Durga to the earth after the preservation of Dharma.
In South India, the festival of Dussehra in particular, in Mysore, Karnataka is celebrated as the day when Chamundeshwari, another image of the goddess Durga, killed the demon Mahishasur.
